I have been an Western dance instructor for 6 years I have always loved dancing and line dancing appealed to me as it was something you could do on your own, seemed great fun and I enjoyed the music, I got in to teaching quite by accident really as i had no intentions of teaching, but I found because of a poor memory I hastily wrote steps down in the break transcribed the scribble as soon as I got home and then practiced every moment to perfect the dance.
Then I found people copied my foot work and even asked me to explain the steps which I couldn't do, I could only show tem. Then a woman said why don`t you take it up teaching, and she recommended the D & G School of western dance, so it started from there. I applied to be on the D&G training program, which is very comprehensive and filled in the many gaps in my dance education.
This knowledge was the key to my new found confidence, I took the exam and then went on to study the next part of partner dancing then on to couples. A lot of organisations offer tuition but not all cover all aspects of western dance. I have classes at New Haw in Surrey it is a day center with a very lively group of people who can dance 'Evergreen' 'Secret Waltz' I have to teach them over a few weeks and most opt out of the turns but we get there. The onus is on fun so I will often teach them a fun dance their favourite at the moment is We love to boogie' by T REX. We are on Monday mornings 90.30...92.00 Tuesdays is at Mytchett community Centre and the new beginners at 7-8 in the small hall 8_15-90-45 in the large hail we have one charge for however long you stay, to encourage the beginners to minx with the next group. I also hold a Social where all my classes get together to dance all they have learned in the previous months, this works well as I find other groups come only on this night as they enjoy dancing without any tuition although I may do a 4 wall reminder and play beginner dances throughout the evening to encourage them to stay on. I also use more country music than most. I also hold a monthly Friday disco which different clubs attend, my aim is to make people welcome I go out of my way to make sure every one is seated and try and keep groups together and more importantly my friendly class welcomes all to share their table. If my visitors are not dancing I check out what they dance and give the list to the DJ. Other classes are for the local leisure centre Wednesday mornings and Adult education classes for beginner courses and improvers, These classes are to get people dancing it is really nice if they stay with me but more importantly to get them confident to dance anywhere. To attend workshops and week end festivals.
